Why ‘dirty’ hair is a no go!

Why ‘dirty’ hair is a no go!

Why 'dirty' hair on your wedding day is a no-go!

2018 May Jessica Toby

HHair f Maybe you’ve heard it said, or maybe ‘a hairdresser’ once told you, that it’s better for your hair to be ‘dirty’ to hold a hair style….

WRONG!

One of THE most important things when it comes to your wedding day hair, and even in preparation for your wedding hair preview session is that your hair is clean.

Define ‘clean’

Clean hair doesn’t have to mean hair that has just been washed. Many brides like to wash their hair the night before their wedding day and that’s absolutley fine, providing you don’t add in any products ( unless you’ve been asked by your wedding hair stylist to do so) and your hair hasn’t got super greasy, oily or sweaty overnight.

Wedding morning hair washing

One of my most asked questions from brides is ‘Can I wash my hair on the morning of my wedding?’. There are a lot of reasons why you might want to do that, maybe for you it’s the ‘norm’ to wash your hair every morning, or maybe you simply wont feel ‘clean’ without doing it. You can absolutely wash your hair on the morning of your wedding, just make sure ( unless we have pre arranged blo dry services ) that it’s also dry and ready to be styled by the time I arrive

If you leave your hair ‘dirty’

Hair that hasn’t been washed for a few days will have produced natural oils. For some people this might not even make much of a noticeable difference but for others it can be an absolute deal breaker. If your hair is weighted down with oils then it will give the impression that it looks ‘greasy’. This will make it harder to style and your own hair oils may not work in harmony with the products I apply. This can result in your hair looking sectioned or even wet, and can darken colour, change tone and even prevent lift and curling.

If you are in any doubt about how best to prepare for your hair session then please do just ask! You’ll find helpful advice on my blog, or even over on my Instagram page.  If you want me to answer a particular question then drop me a DM and i’ll be more than happy to let you know what you need in order to ensure your wedding hair style is a success!

Why ‘dirty’ hair is a no go!

5 things to ask your Wedding Hair Stylist

5 things to ask your wedding hair stylist

So you’re looking at countless instagram pages , searching for the perfect person to create your perfect wedding hair for you. Now you’ve found someone you like – what next? What do you ask them? How do you decide? Well, let me help! I’ve created this post to help you with 5 key questions that you can ask your wedding hair stylist to make sure that they’re the right person for you.

1. Availability

I have lost count of the number of times that I’ve engaged with excited brides to be about how they want their wedding hair to look only to later have to tell them that their date isn’t available. Trust me this is just as upsetting for me as it is for you! If you find someone you think you like then the first question you ask should be ‘ Are you available for my date?’

2. Are these your own styles?

This is really important. When you visit my Instagram pages or my website all the work you see is my own. Wedding hair styles I have personally created. However, that isn’t always the case. Some stylists will use other peoples pictures and post them as ‘inspiration’, to capture brides attention. Some stylists will mention this in their instagram captions, something perhaps like ‘style inspired by x’) but some won’t. It’s fine to get inspiration from other artists but as a bride you need to know that the hair stylist you want for your wedding is personally able to create the type of style you like.

3. How can I best prepare?

Every stylist will want something slightly different. I provide my brides with advice on what I expect when it comes to being wedding hair ready on their big day. This includes clean, dry hair and having a space available for me to set up and work from with an electric socket.

4. Do you have any suggestions?

Don’t be afraid to ask. I love it when brides trust me enough to take on board the advice I can give them to enhance their wedding hair styles. Simple things like moving your partin or changing direction of your curl to give a different effect can make a huge difference when it comes to styling. Ask away! Years of experience and hundreds of hair styles mean that sometimes I can give you a few pointes on things that will really make sure that youre wedding hair look is exactly as you imagined.

5. What do you need from me?

Everyones booking process is different. The majority of suppliers, myself included, will not hold or reserve a date without a commitment, and that commitment comes in the form of an initial payment. This might be a set fee or a percentage of your total quote but either way if youve found the supplier you want to work with then make sure to reserve their services for your big day. If you’re not sure – just ask!

Hope that’s helpful!

A September Wedding at The Oak Grove, Kent // Gemma and Matt

On a beautiful day last September, I headed over to a lovely little place called the Green Farm House to get the beautiful Gemma ready for her big day. I caught up with Gemma and asked her if she wouldn’t mind sharing a few memories of the day with me…and a few photos of course! Taken by the wonderfully talented photographer that is Simon Hawkins ( who also happens to be my husband! ) … Enjoy!

Full name: Gemma Kent
Wedding Date:28/9/19
Venue: The Oak Grove
Photographer: Simon Hawkins

My wedding style was….

Woodland vintage boho

My wedding hair was…..

Amazing Mermaid updo

My wedding make up was….

Natural, pinks – perfect

The thing I love most about my wedding day was….

Marrying the love of my life and sharing our hard work and marriage with those closest to us!

My venue was perfect because…..

it suited our personalities and we fell in love the moment we first visited it was the most magical venue even at night in darkness.

My favourite photo was….

Our 1st dance as our little one got involved too! That was special magical moment as all of our guests got involved and held up their phone torches and it created a perfect picture. ( and of course our chaos flair pictures! Great fun!)

I chose Katie for my wedding hair and make up because …..

She made me feel confident in my choices and I had no worries and new my hair and makeup would be perfect on the day! And it was!

If I could give other brides one piece of advice it would be….

Stay calm and take a step back on the day breath and take it all it, watch everyone for a few minutes enjoying the day that you created as it goes so fast. I did this a few times it was great to stop and take it all in have a moment. Do this with just you and your husband and look around together instead of being busy all day talking away and before you know it the day has gone 🙂

Thank you so much Gemma! If you’re one of my past brides and would be happy to feature on my blog with the details of your day then please do get in touch!

4 Surprising Reasons to book a professional for your wedding hair and make up

4 Surprising Reasons to book a professional for your wedding hair and make up

4 Surprising Reasons to book a professional for your wedding hair and make up

Ok, so most brides know the basics when it comes  to what they’re looking for with their wedding hair and make up artist. Maybe you’re after someone who offer airbrush make up ( me! )  , or someone who can create a fabulous waterfall braid ( also me! ) . However,  there are a few important things that you might not have yet considered ….

1. Allergies and hygiene.

A professional will use a selection of professional and trusted products. They know how to care for them and clean them. They know how to ensure that something will last all day, that it wont aggravate your skin and they know the correct way to work with your personal skin type and texture. Always be sure to make your artist aware of any allergies you have before the application process begins. That way they will know what products to avoid and what products to suggest and substitute if needed.

2. It’s their reputation , and they are not going to take that lightly!

Most artists have spent thousands of pounds and taken years to perfect their art. They want their work to be exceptional. They want you to look amazing and they want people to know that they created that! You don’t want to look ‘ok’ on your wedding day, you want to look incredible. You want your look to last and your artist wants you to be so pleased that you go on and recommend them to your friends and family without hesitation.

3. They know how to deal with the situation.

Sometimes things don’t go to plan. Timings may change, things might happen outside of your control, but a professional will be able to take that in their stride and deal with it. You don’t want someone who is going to get flustered and anxious, you want someone who is confident and makes you feel comfortable. They know what they are doing, they have experience and even if you might find yourself in a situation you hadn’t anticipated , a true professional will be able to remain calm and deal with it.

4. They can work alongside other professionals.

Chances are that this isn’t the first wedding your hair and make up artist has had the honour of participating in. As time goes on you learn the expectations of other suppliers as well as your own. Maybe the photographer wants to get some prep shots of you getting your liner applied, or the wedding co ordinator wants to take you to see the room dressed before your guests start to arrive. Most of these things we can anticipate and even suggest to ensure that you are getting as much out of your morning as possible. Often, your hair and make up artist might even find that they know your photographer or are familiar working at your particular venue.

Everyone wants to ensure that they play their part in making sure you have the most amazing wedding morning. If you think you might like me to join you in making yours one to remember then please do get in touch.  I only work with one wedding per day so once your booking is confirmed you can rest assured that I’ll be with you until the moment you head off down the aisle!

Kent Wedding Awards Finalist 2020

Kent Wedding Awards Finalist 2020

I am so delighted to be able to announce that yesterday I found out that I had made finalist for the Kent wedding Awards 2020!

For those of you that follow me, this is the award that I won back in 2016. Ive made finalist 5 times now and it’s a great honour to be recognised for what I do!  The little pink heart has become a well known feature for any brides and grooms planning their wedding. Many couples know and trust the suppliers who carry this logo so I’m proud to be able to display it again for 2020.

It’s important for me as a self employed stylist that I make sure that I’m doing everything I can , to be as good as I possibly can be for the brides that choose me. Entering the awards is my way of ‘putting myself out there’. I take great pride in what I do and the business I have created and I’m so grateful for recognition of that.

Awards are great but there really is no better feeling than a bride messaging me after her wedding to say thankyou or send photos. It’s such an important job – being there on the morning of someones wedding day, and it’s such a privilege to have them trust you to create the look that will last them forever in their photographs.

So thankyou to all of the brides that have chosen me and of course to all of the brides that have booked me for their 2020/2021 wedding dates. I can’t wait to be a part of your big day…. I really do have the best job in the world!

( As I write this post I’ve stumbled across the post I wrote back in 2016 after winning the Bridal Hair title… I’ve put it below so you can have a read! Sometimes you simply have to take a moment and appreciate how far you have come! )

”It’s no secret that I love my job, I love what I do, I love that it fits around my life and my family and I love that a day at work – doesn’t even seem like a day at work! Four years ago when I was sat in my dead end job, clock watching, wishing my days away – the life I have now seemed like a million miles away. I didn’t even know it could exist. I had trained as a hairdresser years after leaving school. It wasn’t until I returned from three seasons in the sunshine that I finally enrolled myself in college and decided to go for it. I had always wanted to be a hairdresser, I loved playing with hair and I loved art so two years and two NVQ’s later – when someone first asked me if I offered bridal hair services I answered yes immediately. It was one of those moments where I thought ‘yeah , that sounds like a good idea, I could do that couldn’t i?! ’ and the rest as they say … is history!”
